Reconstruction of the Tholos of Sikyon, around 500 BC.
It was erected by the oligarchs coming to power after the Orthagiridae.
In its foundations were found the remnants of two other buildings
erected by the Sikyonians. The first building was resembling the tholos
of the Athena Pronaia, around 580 BC, had 13 Doric columns, 6.32m in
diameter. Later, Herodes of Atticus build his exedra on the same spot.
The second building, from which the five metope (shown in the previous
pages) and some other parts were found, consisted from 14 small Doric
columns with a roof (person) without inner walls, around 560 BC. |
