Head of
Doryphoros.
This is the true face of Doryphoros of Polykleitos. It is a faithful
copy in the form of a bronze herm and was made by the Athenian
Apollonios, about the time of Roman emperor Augustus.
We notice immediately that the face is not the same with the copy of
Doryphoros at the Naples museum.
Such is the case with all the other surviving copies in which the face
and other characteristics are different.
This is because the artists did not try to make exact copies but only
pursued to maintain the general points which Canon had led down.
The head is very important for another reason. It gives additional
weight in our assumption that the Doryphoros was actually the Canon
since ancient sources do not state this explicitly. |
