The "Omphalos", the Navel of
the Earth,
as the ancients believed to be at Delphi.
The Omphalos is covered with the netting of woolen ribbons,
the so called "αγρηνόν".
According to the ancient belief, the
Omphalos was the tomb
of the dragon Python, son of Gaia,
who was killed by the god Apollo, in order to get possession
of the Oracle. According to others, Zeus left free two eagles
from the
deepest corners of the universe, in order to find the
center of the earth. They flew towards each other and met
at Delphi,
the Omphalos.
