Kleitias mixing-bowl, 570 - 560 BC

Black figure mixing bowl (krater) depicting scenes from mythology. In the multiple friezes
one can see at the top the Kalydonian boar hunt, where Meleager in front and Dioskouroi at the back, after a hard struggle, kill the boar. In the second frieze, a chariot race takes place at the funeral games in honor of Patroklos. The main narrative scene is in the third diazoma and depicts the marriage of Peleus with Thetis, in which all the Olympian gods attended. Peleus was the king of Thessaly and Thetis a sea nymph. Peleus stands in front of his palace and welcomes the deities, who arrive in a procession of chariots. The adventures of his son Achilles, Theseus, the return of Hephaistos, the Gorgon, wild animals and Artemis are also depicted. In total, 270 human and animal figures are painted with 121 inscriptions.
It is signed by the Athenians Kleitias and the potter Ergotimos, 570 - 560 BC. Florence

The back side of the krater. In the top frieze the fight of the Greeks and Centaurs
